The addition is filled with an abundance of daylight that streams through expansive windows that also unite the house with the lovely surrounding landscape. The sensitively proportioned windows add repose to the design. The original house and the addition appear to be knitted together with great skill. Not only were the architectural components of the project visually connected with the surrounding landscape, but also various strategies were employed to use the forces and properties of the natural world to reduce energy consumption. Figuratively speaking, this addition, in and of itself, seems to breath fresh air, which must be a joy to the homeowners.”

Pictured are: Mike Raphael, Mairi Schuler, President AIA Bucks County, Joel Levinson, Juror, and Linda Szpak, Project Manager.

View Project

During the Renaissance, architects made great strides in developing accurate scale drawings of plans, elevations, perspectives, and scale wooden models. The drawings and models were then used by builders to construct the structure. These architectural techniques carried through most of the 20th century.

In the digital age of today, plans are rarely drawn by hand. Architects have returned to designing three-dimensional models that can appear at full size. However, the models are now virtual, designed utilizing computer programs, and printed in two- dimensional scale drawings and three-dimensional “camera views” from anywhere within or outside the model. Multiple design options can easily be evaluated by copying models and changing specific elements of the design. Great improvements in architectural software now help architects communicate more effectively with their clients. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Builders can use a three-dimensional model to prepare accurate construction estimates earlier in the design process. Those models allow the architect to correct potential construction collisions of different building systems, such as structure, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, and finishes. Eliminating ambiguity in architectural drawings translates to less guessing for the contractor and lower construction costs for the owner.

During the design process, the architect can make changes to the model live on-screen in meetings with the owner to show desired modifications. Early visualization in three-dimensional models enables virtual walk-throughs and fly-bys simulating how the owner will experience the building. Raphael Architects can show you how the digital models of today can help you envision your home of tomorrow.

Planning for future changes in your life can be a critical component in your ability to remain in and enjoy your family home.

As your family enlarges, you can add to your home in harmony with your existing house and lifestyle. Initially, your house should be large enough to meet your current needs and near-term family plans. Changes may occur that require future expansion. Reasons could include the need for an at-home office, an exercise room, or additional space related to your children or parents, such as an au pair or in-law suite.

Children may grow up and move out. They may also return home to search for a job or save money for a house. Your parents may want to sell their home, move to an island, and use your home as the anchoring family location.

In some cases, your home may require renovations to enable handicapped accessibility related to family members’ mobility issues. You may consider modifying layout or adding a ramp, an elevator, and wider doors to support aging comfortably in your own home.

Your home can adapt with changes in your family over time. At Raphael Architects, we enjoy helping our clients navigate the natural tides of family growth, avoid moving and remain active members of their communities. Like a great wine, a home can improve with age.

Some may never return to the office, while others may split time between home and office once COVID-19 restrictions ease. Either way, at-home work and study are here to stay. You may be considering renovations and additions to your home to accommodate more family members living and working together for many more hours each week. How can you best improve your home to create a workspace that optimizes your productivity and provides the privacy you need?

In this new reality, your virtual meetings and classrooms offer a public window into your home. Organize to separate your workspace from your children, pets, and clutter. Capture a controlled background from your camera to frame a pleasing composition behind you, such as an orderly display of your treasures. Add indirect lighting to illuminate your face and highlight focal elements behind you. In short, create a curated stage set-like setting that you intentionally share with your clients and colleagues.

A home office should provide acoustical and visual separation between work and family functions. Separation can help you dispel the feeling that you are living at work 24/7. Consider adaptive reuse of an under-utilized room or attic as a quick and affordable home office alternative and renovations to storage areas to create a place for everything to maintain order in your busy home. Think creatively about the spaces within your home or possible additions and renovations, to optimize your home’s functionality as both a workplace and a comforting personal sanctuary. Everything evolves over time, and your home can also transform to make the most of this “new normal” in which we find ourselves.

Raphael Architects has been creating transformative architecture to meet the changing needs of our clients for over three decades.

The contrast between his humble childhood Sears house and the purposeful barns and new unique homes sparked an interest in learning how to build and design these intentional homes. Each new construction project created a learning environment. The agricultural buildings’ iconic forms, combined with the houses that captured historical nostalgia, worked together to create an authentic sense of place within the hills and valleys of Bucks County.

Lured away by educational opportunities in Boston, and subsequent practice in San Francisco, Michael relished the opportunity to explore extraordinary buildings designed by master architects of the 20th century, including Aalto, Wright, Maybeck and Greene and Greene. These buildings express a truth about intended use, while capturing some whimsy to stretch the notion of ideal architecture.

Inspired to return to Bucks County, Raphael started his architecture practice by designing and building a highly crafted Not-So-Big House. That first house won the local American Institute of Architects annual design award. Through thirty-five years of practice, our highly accomplished staff has continued to design award-winning houses for discerning clients. Our goal remains to create homes of character, responsive to the setting, reflective of our clients’ aspirations and respectful of our natural resources. The daily joy our clients experience is testament to Raphael Architects quest to create homes that nurture and delight.

Nantucket Sleigh Ride by Michael Raphael, AIA, LEED AP – I imagine myself as a whaler in the early nineteenth century. The rhythm of planning, searching, waiting, pursuing, and catching all seem very familiar to me. I also can imagine the exhilaration of the Nantucket sleigh ride.

As a leading indicator of the larger economy, architectural practice is cast adrift when the economic winds disappear. Optimism vanishes and despair takes its place. I imagine a whaler 200 years ago must have experienced similar thoughts as he waited for the winds in the dog days of summer.

I entered this profession in the midst of an energy crisis. Construction nearly stopped as interest rates in the United States rose to double digits. I kept my nose down and followed the work from Boston to Philadelphia to San Francisco. When the economy later rebounded in the late 1980s, construction followed suit, and architects grew more adventuresome. Around this time, I started my own firm. Unfortunately, a number of years later, the housing bubble imploded and the financial crisis hit, and construction all but ceased. For several years, architects tightened their belts and absorbed society’s best insults. As recently as October of 2012, a Forbes article on the Top 10 Worst College Majors revealed that “the collapse of the housing market means architecture majors now face an unemployment rate of 13.9%, the highest of all the majors tracked.”

Architects can once again rejoice in the return of the economic winds. The profession has absorbed the depths of our economic cycle and now occupies a front row seat in our pursuit of spectacular projects. Within the past year, Raphael Architects has designed master plans for both George School and United Friends School, and completed a new gymnasium and Wellness Center for the Upper Bucks YMCA. We have also begun designing new pools, gymnasiums and locker room rooms for the North Penn YMCA as well as a new banquet hall for the Washington Crossing Inn. As a small firm we have collaborated with fellow architecture firms on many of these projects to ensure we keep up with demand.

I am not much of a fisherman or hunter and have no interest in killing, but I can still empathize with those Nantucket whalers when they waited on glassy seas and share their excitement when they rode in their tiny boats tethered to those majestic creatures. With the possible exception of the whalers, few professions can offer the exhilarating feeling an architect experiences when designing a new facility. I look forward to each day I have the opportunity to work in my profession.

by Michael Raphael, AIA, LEED AP Raphael Architects – The climate has changed dramatically in the past four years for all product and service providers in the real estate and construction industry. An understandable response is to complain about the decreased demand and the rising costs; attempting to assign blame to those responsible for the change. A more practical response would be to learn from the lessons of other businesses that have undergone dramatic change. Buggy whips, eight track tape machines, fax machines, encyclopedias, drafting products, and hammers all used to be in high demand. Technology has decreased the demand for all of these instruments. There are great opportunities ahead of us. How we chose to respond to those opportunities is within our control. We can choose to embrace change or cling tightly to our past practices.

In the next few decades the world population will increase from 7 billion to about 10 billion people. A majority of the growth will take place in urban areas. The US population is already changing from a suburban family lifestyle. Today, this market accounts for only 24% of our population. Households without children account for 76% of the market. There are more single person households (30%) than households with children. Currently there are 74 million baby boomers (51 to 69) in the US. There are 83 million millenials (19 to 37). Both groups desire invigorating places to live. They already desire places to go (“Third Place”) when they aren’t sleeping (“First Place”) or working (“Second Place”). The closer and more convenient these places are, the greater the likelihood they will be successful.

Major drivers of change within the next 20 years include: decreased carbon footprint and dependence on oil and gas, intelligent transportation, living with nature, climate change, carbon neutral living (net zero), renovation or rehabilitation of the 111,000,000 existing residential units and 4,900,000 commercial units.

There is great financial opportunity to live more efficiently. Currently suburban households spend about 25% of their family income on transportation. Urban households spend about 11% on transportation. Americans spend approximately 32% of the total life cycle cost of their buildings on maintenance and operations. This amount is nearly identical to the 33% they spend on land acquisition and construction and the 31% they spend on interest. Indirect costs account for 2.5% and design for the remaining 1.5%.

Texas, California and our neighboring state, New Jersey, have all passed laws to encourage energy conservation in homes by offering healthy tax rebates. For example, homeowners in Texas get a 70-80% tax rebate when they install solar collectors in their home. Pennsylvania home- owners currently get only the utility savings that come from such an installation. The state provides no additional incentive.

There are many common sense approaches that can generate more efficient use of the environment if we just pause long enough to give them their due consideration.

At the annual convention for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) held from May 15-17, 2008 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, one of America’s leaders in the building of environmentally responsible residences, Peter Pfeiffer, FAIA, Austin, TX, addressed the topic of “Green Homebuilding by Design.” He drew upon over thirty years of building green to address some of the pitfalls architects face in executing green design. Although much of his talk addressed technical issues, much of what he said bordered on plain common sense.

Based on a combination of our experience and his inspiring remarks, we have developed the following top ten things you can do to make better use of the environment when designing your home or office. Some can be retrofitted into an existing structure; others would require new construction or major rework.

For instance, newer EnergyStar® appliances use less energy than their older counterparts. Older refrigerators and freezers are notorious for burning up energy needlessly. Simple things like light bulbs can make a difference. Having a porch also protects that part of the house from the sun’s heat while allowing natural light still to filter through. The ducts you find throughout your house are a major culprit in air leakage. If your clothes dryer
has a flexible duct, replace it with a hard ducted metal one. Twice as much air
will flow through the metal duct making lint residue escaping into your laundry area. Exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom should also use a commercial grade duct system to maximize effectiveness and have all joints taped. Placing the fans on timers also increases their effectiveness. It is also important to balance these exhaust fans as they can depressurize the house, replacing the air with that from the chimney or garage leading to poor air quality throughout the house.

You should use the more expensive closed cell foam for the first inch of coverage, and the spray the remainder of the depth requirement with open cell foam, which is much cheaper. Spray foam is particularly effective on attic roof rafters and the underside of the roof decking. Insulating your attic in this fashion reduces the humidity in your home, keeps your attic and your air ducts cooler and allows for cleaner storage.

By building in hydro zones you can reduce that usage to 3,000 gallons per month or better still, consider xeriscaping, where plants appropriate to the region are emphasized and water evaporation minimized. Therefore, it is important to recognize that not all windows are created equal and that they should be positioned where they can optimize solar heat and minimize heat loss due to wind. Higher grade, double pane, gas-filled windows are more suitable where they are needed to fend off high winds. In addition, although Low-E glass is considered an industry standard, it is important to remember that it does cut out the blue spectrum of light, often leading to the depression that results from lack of exposure to the the full spectrum of light.

As architects, we look at the indicators inherent in each individual site. Situating a building on its site in a way that minimizes its environmental effect will, for example, create less storm water run-off. There are several ways of preserving the open space on the site. They include: control of topsoil erosion, rainwater collection, rain gardens and plant selection.

Control of topsoil erosion during and after construction can be achieved by the implementation of permeable materials such as porous paving. Rainwater collection devices help delay and disperse the rainwater. Building rain gardens decrease erosion by providing a place to collect and store rainwater until it can be slowly released back into the soil. If the water can be slowly released into the soil, it can be absorbed and slowly filter into the aquifer below to the groundwater. Conversely, if the rainwater is quickly released, it may overflow and fill retention basins and storm sewers, flow into our streams and rivers and ultimately out to sea. Lastly, the selection of plants should be carefully considered. Native trees and plants are favored over foreign plants, which have different water and soil requirements. Low water consuming plants and trees should be considered and may be of benefit the site.

Daylight reduces electrical consumption and has been proven to improve occupants’ health, happiness and productivity. Daylighting is most efficiently achieved by orienting the building along a north-south axis, toward maximum southern exposure. Through the use of windows, clerestories and light shelves, natural light can be used to make a building environmentally efficient.

Sustainable principles must be implemented minding the exterior climate of the building. To control the air comfort in a building, one can employ solar heat, double glazed wall construction, natural ventilation, geothermal, as well as highly efficient HVAC systems.

Solar heating uses radiation from the sun to passively heat the building. This concept works extremely well and must be utilized in concert with large overhangs to prevent overheating in the summer months in our climate. The overhangs shade the windows in the summer when the sun angles are high and allow sunlight to pass through the windows during the winter when the sun angles are low. This allows the solar radiation into the building during the cool months, and excludes the radiation from the building during the hot months.

Double glazed walls are normally placed on the southern façade and incorporate an exterior layer of glass, an air space, and an interior layer of glass. The system uses the stack effect (warm air rises, cool air sinks) to heat and cool a building. Openings in the glass are placed high and low in both layers of glass. During the summer, the high windows are opened on the interior, catching the rising warm air and releasing it out of the building. In the winter, the sun warms the air between the faces of glass, and then enters the building as warming air. Natural ventilation passively cools the air in a building. It employs operable windows that, when open, create a cross-ventilation effect. Natural ventilation also provides fresh air to improve the health of its occupants.

The geothermal system involves drilling wells into the earth. Water in pipes is pumped to the wells. This takes advantage of the earth’s constant temperature (generally 55 degrees F) and uses the earth as a giant heat sink. The water is then sent through a heat exchanger, either preheating or cooling the air or water for the building’s HVAC system.

High-efficiency HVAC systems reduce heating and cooling cost. These systems cost more initially. However, they cost less to operate and therefore often have a lower lifecycle cost.

A final thought on controlling the air temperature in a building is to incorporate a vestibule. This also helps to reduce heating costs. A vestibule creates a heat trap, so when the exterior door is opened, only the heat within the vestibule can escape. The heat from the remainder of the building is trapped by the interior vestibule door.

This alone is motivation to choose alternative, more environmentally friendly energy sources. Alternative energy systems commonly employed make use of the environmental staples of sun and wind.

Solar power uses photovoltaic panels made of silicon. When sunlight hits these panels, it creates electricity. Solar panels require a backup power source. The first of two power backup sources is to tie the solar power system into the community’s electrical provider’s system. On a sunny day, any excess electricity generated is added to the power grid of the local provider. When electricity cannot be generated at night or on a cloudy day, the consumer can draw the power from the grid. If more power is added to the power company’s grid during a billing period then taken, the provider must pay the consumer for the excess. The second way to achieve a power backup is to use a battery source that has been charged with the excess power generated. This system is more expensive and generally only used in rural situations.

Wind energy is created in a wind farm. The wind turns a propeller which in turn generates electricity. In some areas, wind power is available from the local energy provider at an additional cost, although with more and more wind farms starting up and the technology increasing, the additional cost is becoming less.

Examples of renewable or recycled materials are bamboo flooring, recycled carpets, and cellulose insulation. Wood logged from a certified forest is also considered a green material, although it is generally more expensive and difficult to obtain. Composite woods are made from recycled woods and plastics. They generally have a longer lifespan and require less to maintain.

Selecting the proper insulation, high-efficiency windows, occupancy sensors and energy rated light fixtures combine to make a great difference in the energy rating and efficiency of a building. The two types of insulation used with sustainability in mind are blown cellulose and spray foam. Blown cellulose is a good choice because it is made from recycled newspaper and has a high R-value. Spray foam is considered sustainable and when applied correctly, creates a very tight building envelope which prevents air infiltration and lowers HVAC load and usage.

High-efficiency windows save energy. They have a high U value rating and are made of two or even three layers of glass with argon gas in the cavities. Properly sealing these windows with caulk and weather stripping can prevent further air infiltration into the building. Certain considerations should be made when selecting light fixtures. It is advisable to select energy star rated fixtures as well as switch from traditional incandescent bulbs to compact florescent bulbs, which use less energy. Light-emitting diodes or LEDs are another alternative. LEDs use less electricity and have a dramatically longer lifespan than other bulbs.

Since the 1980s, Principal Michael Raphael, AIA, has incorporated green ideas into his designs. Raphael Architects’ most recently completed sustainable project, the Crist residence, incorporates many of the discussed sustainable ideas. The project includes bamboo flooring, clerestories for daylighting, geothermal heating, natural wood siding and trim, and blown cellulose insulation, to name a few. Michael also co-chairs the Central Bucks County Chamber of Commerce Architecture and Environment committee, which once a year holds a sustainable design lecture to educate area architects, builders and homeowners on sustainable design.
